Jolly J!

Seeing the humor in little things

My brother, a self-confessed slow reader, admits that he finds it hard to concentrate every time he attempts to read a book. But despite this admission, he has managed to graduate from a top medical school in Manila.

One day, he brings home a book on speed reading. As the title suggests, the book features helpful tips on how one can read books — both fiction and non-fiction — in a jiffy without missing the main points. It’s supposed to aid slow readers to become the speed readers they wanted to be.

A few months later, eager to know his feedback on the book, I ask my brother, “So, what are the secrets to speed reading? Was it a good buy, the book you bought a long time ago? Would you recommend it to us?”

“I can’t say. I haven’t finished reading it yet,” he answers with a chuckle. (Manila, Philippines/Sometime in 1999)
